Our story

The craft of Bolgatanga's weavers

In the town of Bolgatanga, in northern Ghana, weavers have turned elephant grass into baskets for generations. The grass is gathered, split and coiled, then hand-woven with colourful recycled strips into a basket that is strong, flexible and built to last. No two are alike — each carries the pattern and colour choice of the weaver who made it. Bolga Weave works directly with these weavers and pays fairly, bringing the baskets to the world as they have been made for decades: by hand, one at a time, each its own.

How it's made

Elephant grass is gathered, split and coiled into the base and sides of the basket. Colourful strips — often from recycled material — are woven in as the basket is built, creating the pattern. Each basket is finished by a single weaver.

How to use it

Use it as a sturdy storage basket for fruit, laundry, toys or firewood, or as a decorative piece. It is strong and flexible, and it carries a little weight well. Keep it dry and brush or wipe it clean as needed.

Use them for storage — fruit, laundry, toys, firewood or market shopping — or as decorative pieces. The market and laundry baskets carry a real load.

Are they durable?

Yes. The elephant grass is strong and flexible, and the baskets carry weight well. With simple care — kept dry and cleaned gently — they last for years.

Is it a medical or health product?

No. It is a woven straw basket for storage and decor. It is not a medicine and not intended to address any condition — it is a piece of handcraft to live with.

Are they ethically sourced?

Yes. We work directly with the weavers and pay fairly for the skilled handwork. The craft is the weavers' livelihood, and fair trade helps it continue.
